United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

Topic: LATAM Drug Cartels

The United Nations Office On Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has the mandate to combat international crime, and this can range from anti-corruption measures to helping police close off smuggling routes. Recently drug cartels in Latin America, like the infamous Sinaloa Cartel, have been wreaking havoc on local stability and development. These organizations run a mafia economy where lucrative deals are made using cash from the sales of addictive drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. Local governments find it very difficult to disrupt these economies as usually, the cartel has influenced the government by bribing local officials with their abundant drug money. In this committee, the delegate's task will be finding well-researched and innovative solutions to fighting local corruption and assisting local governments in their fight against the powerful drug cartels.
